More Calipers, Better? Do You Really Know About Brakes?

[Catalog:News] [Date:2021-1-27] [Hits:] [Return]

With one foot of the brake, the booster pump will amplify the movement of your sole, push the brake fluid in the brake master cylinder, transfer the force to the piston in the caliper through the oil pipe, and then clamp the brake disc by the brake leather to slow down the vehicle.

This set of the simplest hydraulic transmission principle actually plays the most important role in safe driving, and is even called "the most important part".

But before refitting, you have to understand some basic knowledge of brake system.

The disc brake must be better than the drum brake

When the disc brake is braking, the oil from the brake master cylinder will fill the left and right cavities of the calipers through the oil pipe, so that the piston will push the brake leather to clamp the rotating brake disc and produce friction to slow down.

The drum brake also needs to transmit the hydraulic oil to the pistons on both sides of the wheel cylinder. The pistons push and compress the brake shoes on both sides, and friction occurs with the inner wall of the brake drum to slow down.

In a word, the disc brake has the characteristics of fast heat dissipation, light weight, fast braking and convenient adjustment. It also has good high temperature resistance under high load, stable braking effect and less affected by external environmental factors. However, the disc brake also has its disadvantages. First of all, the manufacturing cost is significantly higher than that of the drum brake. In addition, the durability of the disc brake is not as good as that of the drum brake.

Even if it is the disc brake, the size of the brake disc and caliper, and the design of the brake pump will directly affect the braking effect of a car, so the braking effect can not be judged only by the brake model and structure; under the same braking conditions, the strength of the drum brake is no less than that of the disc brake, and the brake system of the vehicle with the drum brake is easier to install and maintain.

Is the bigger the brake disc, the better the performance?

Many people think that increasing the diameter of the brake disc can increase the braking torque, thus increasing the braking force. In fact, this statement is not completely correct. After all, after increasing the brake disc, it is necessary to match the bridge code and brake pad, and replace the brake caliper if necessary, otherwise the effect is very little.

More calipers, better brakes?

With the increase of caliper piston, the inner volume of caliper will also increase. As we all know, the oil pressure in the calipers comes from the brake master cylinder. Under the condition that the output pressure of the master cylinder remains unchanged, the larger the inner volume of the calipers, the smaller the pressure in the whole closed oil circuit. Therefore, it is often said that after the original four piston calipers are upgraded to six piston calipers, the brake is not as good as it used to be. This is exactly the reason. Therefore, when upgrading calipers, it is necessary to upgrade the brake master cylinder.

However, the dot5 brake fluid is not suitable for ordinary brake system, because the silicone oil base will corrode the brake piston oil seal, brake oil pipe rubber joint and other parts in the brake system, which may cause problems such as brake fluid leakage, brake piston pressure reduction and so on, or even cause the brake system unable to work normally. If you deal with daily walking and occasional track days, you can use DOT4.
